TRAVELING WITH SICRAL 2

SICRAL (Italian System for Secure Communications and Alerts) is the Italian satellite system for military communications that allows interoperability between the networks of Defense, law enforcement, civil emergency, and for the management of strategic infrastructure.

WHAT IS SICRAL 2?

It is a geostationary satellite operating in the UHF and SHF bands. It enhances the military satellite communications capabilities of the Italian and French armies already provided by SICRAL 1 (launched in 2001), SICRAL 1B (launched in 2009), and by France’s Syracuse system.

The satellite has an additional backup function to the current capacity in SHF band of the French Syracuse 3 system and that of SICRAL 1B allocated to NATO communications.

The operating life of SICRAL 2 is estimated at 15 years.

TELESPAZIO’S ROLE

For SICRAL 2, Telespazio managed the phases of planning, implementation, integration and testing of the ground segment to support the routine phase at the Interforce Management and Control Centre of Vigna di Valle (Rome) and the Fucino Space Centre (backup).

It is responsible for the launch services from the European Spaceport in Kourou, the LEOP (Launch and Early Orbit Phase) and IOT (In Orbit Test) from the Fucino Space Centre. It is responsible as well for the interconnection system between the Italian and French mission centres.

Telespazio also developed the simulator and the control centre that will be operational at the Vigna di Valle Centre.

SICRAL 2 LANDED IN KOUROU

(04 March 2015)

In the afternoon of 4 March, SICRAL 2 arrived at the Cayenne airport Félix Eboué in Kourou, French Guiana, after about twelve hours of flight. The disembarking procedures were carried out normally under a gentle but insistent rain. The satellite was then moved to the launch base for the start of the pre-launch checks and tests. »»
